ClearLeaf was launched in Costa Rica to create sustainable crop protection strategies that manage the impacts of harmful pests while maintaining natural balances on the farm, protecting farmers and consumers. We design and commercialize innovative pre and post-harvest solutions that protect the environment and optimize farmer profits.

Why Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a recognized global leader in sustainability, and a leading global exporter of a number of crops including pineapple, banana, and coffee. Over the last decade, Costa Rica has seen rapid growth in technology innovation, particularly in the life sciences sector. Over 280 global high-tech companies – including 24% of the Fortune 100 – operate in the country. Life Sciences exports have more than tripled since 2007.

Why a U.S. Headquarter

We have moved our corporate headquarters to the U.S. to better protect our rapidly increasing base of intellectual property, provide an ideal location for future investors, and be closer to major target markets. Our day-to-day operations continue to be run primarily out of our Costa Rica offices, keeping us close to our first market as well as leaders in some of our priority crops (banana, pineapples, and coffee).

It all started with an idea

What if we could protect our crops the same way we protect human skin? Let’s face it – pest control has been done poorly. Traditional agrochemicals weaken the soil, destroy the environment, and pose a threat to our health as workers and consumers. And over time, they lose effectiveness as plant pathogens evolve to survive ever more deadly poisons. Something needs to change.

One day, as we were looking at a coffee field outside of our offices, meeting about something else, it became obvious: we had a great technology, and the best team of experts possible for the task. Together we could have impact. Together, we were ClearLeaf.
